Hey guys,

I would like to change my family name, which is way too long and make it short. I am an indian national and at first the name is changed on the passport which is quiet easy. What are the next steps? Has anyone done this?

You should go to your foreigners office and inform them about the change.. They will change it in their system and will give you a certificate about the change.. And then you could inform your bank, insurance etc..

Hello Faisal,

I also wish to change my family name, which is too long.
I am also an Indian Citizen.
Could you please tell, what is the procedure for getting it changed on the passport ? Is it possible to do it from Germany ?

Hello Gauri,

It's not a complex process. You should publish the change of name in a local newspapaer back india and in a newspaper from the place u live in germany. Once it is published, you should take both this newspapers and a signed affidavit and an application form to the embassy. Thats it. It costs about 12€.
