elterngeld and tax class

Hi All,

I think eltergeld will be 67% of last 12 years earnings.
Is the elterngeld fixed (67%) irrespective of tax class?
Can the partner of someone getting elterngeld can change tax class.?

Thanks

True

67% is based on the average monthly salary for the last 12 months. So yes if you had class 3 then you get more elterngeld than other classes.

Give the exact scenario what you exactly want! Are you planning to get elterngeld or are you getting elterngeld. do both partners want to claim or only one person.

Thanks raj,

My wife is expecting baby in March and she gets elterngeld from May.
From May my wife will get 67% of her last 12 months salary.
Presently both are with tax class 4.

From may can i convert my tax class to 3 and my wife tax class to 5.
If yes what is the change in elterngeld.

Thanks

Congrads.

Then change your wife's class to 3 and yours to 5. That way your wife can get more Elterngeld when they calculate the netto average.

Yes

No change.

the salary included as elterngeld calculation for your wife is from (expected delivery date - 6 weeks) - 12 months. So changing your wife tax card now will have little influence to your elterngeld.
Beside a couple may change tax class only 1 time per year (without specific reason such as married, etc.).

If you want to do it, you have to change now valid from 01.01.2010 then you may change again 1 time in May.

Anyway, you can declare tax later (that is my understanding).

Thanks Raj.

@VP_2004: In my case the elterngeld calculation will be from mid jan 2009. Am i right?

I think every one can change tax class 2 times (not 1 time).

Thanks

since your wife will get mutterschaftgeld (sorry I don't remember the exact name of that). However it is the salary that is paid your wife employer 6 weeks prior give birth and 8 weeks after that.
Once the money is decided, you can immediately change your tax card to class3. because this money is not influence by tax class.

I am not aware we can change 2 time a year, anyway maybe you are right.
