1. Kindergeld: 154 euros/month. In some States, cities, one can get a gift, my wife got something like 500 euros from the State in 2003 when we had our daughter, it was in Mainz. Never found something official about it, so don't count on it.

2. Only if one of the parent has it.

Dear Sunil,

Apart from Kindergeld you would also get something called elterngeld.

Pls go at below site
http://www.elterngeld.de/pages/elterngeld.html
This basically says that all parents irrespective of their earning capacities would get elterngeld

This is could one way be only you wife appalies for the same and she will get 300 Euro per month
for 12 months .The form is available online as well you can get it from your Stadt Burgeramt.

Other way is that You can apply the elterngeld for your own self which would be 67% of (last12months salary(nettO)divided by 12)
But should not exceed 1800 euro
If you apply on your own name(you would be taking care of kid born full time) then you cannot work during the time you are getting eltern geld

There is also a possibilty of working during this elterngeld time . You can work up 30 hours in week
But the stadt would deduct money(eltengeld) based on what you earn in those 30 hours

Little complicated but if you go to the AMT directly you should be able to get more info

There is also a elterngeld rechner whereby you can calculate how much will you get if you appaly for elterngeld
http://www.bmfsfj.de/Elterngeldrechner/weiter.do

So enjoy and best of luck with sleepless nights

Kindergeld form you will also get from the stadt where you live
