Visa Questions

unmarried, children, family reunion Visa Germany?

My australien Partner and I have been together for 6 years, have 2 children and are not married.
We now want to move to Germany to be closer with my family, I am German.
Is there a way he can come with us on the family reunion visa if we arent married?
Somewhere i read the following
"If you're the spouse or registered partner, unmarried, minor child of a
German citizen, or parent/legal guardian of an unmarried, minor German
citizen – and not from the EU/EEA/Switzerland – you will be issued with a
residence permit as long as the relation you're joining is living in
Germany.
"

But can not find anymore information on this on the Internet and the German Embassy regarding Visa information is not open until Friday.
Has anyone been in a similiar situation is there a way to not be married and have him come with us? Or do we have to get married for him to be able to stay with us? We do want to get married one day but not now and not just for a visa...

Thanks in advance for all your help emoticon
