I moved myself back to the US about 6 Month ago. I had a quiet an EXPERIENCE (since 2000) in DE I wouldn't want to repeat anytime soon. I assume you are going to California. Well here is what I did with shipping my stuff: I left most of it in DE because there are way too many restrictions on shipping personal belongings to the US, allmost all of shippers have stopped taking such orders after nine eleven. Although expensive I found the Deutsche Post to be the cheapest, 20Kg for 62 Euros, ship ist via Ground, it is the same as Air because it gets flown into the next airport of destination, takes about 12 days.
You can buy almost everything cheaper in the US than in DE and like I said I shipped all my important stuff via mail.

I moved thru' immigration. the processing in De. takes 1 year. I have not yet met anyone who came with work visa directly.
