I am a Green card holder and my GC will be expiring next year.
In my case when my GC expires i would not have paid 60 months of pension fund as I was unemployed for almost 3 months. What can I do to get the permanent visa or is it not possible?
It would be really nice if somebody can help me with it.

It doesn't matter - if you have worked full 60 Months or not since you have got your current residence permit before 1.1.2005. "Nr. 3" mentioned below is the point requiring 60 pensions. As you can see due to § 104 it is invalid for you.

§ 104 Übergangsregelungen AufenthG

(2) Bei Ausländern, die vor dem 1. Januar 2005 im Besitz einer Aufenthaltserlaubnis oder Aufenthaltsbefugnis sind, ist es bei der Entscheidung über die Erteilung einer Niederlassungserlaubnis hinsichtlich der sprachlichen Kenntnisse nur erforderlich, dass sie sich auf einfache Art in deutscher Sprache mündlich verständigen können. § 9 Abs. 2 Nr. 3 und 8 findet keine Anwendung.

Can somebody put some light how to proceed with process of applying for extending the GC and when should one start with it and which documents are required.

Jack it is no problem at all.
Go to ABH with your Pass and 3 last salaries 6 weeks before your GC expires.

And give the Citizen watch to DvD because he found out about this rule that we do not need 60 saleries :-).

No :-) it is some old stuff :-), check old postings... Nothing important actually :-). In short: because DvD found out that we do not need 60 salaries, and everybody thought that we do need 60 salaries :-) It was very good news for all of us at the time... And it still is :-).

Is the resident permit during the internship days also taken into consideration towards the 60 months figure? I studied in another country, but just came to Germany for an internship

not really! internship time is not counted towards 60 months pension for NE.
