pros&cons of DE citizenship over just NE (or BE)

Toggle
HI,
I am Indian living in Germany for almost 7.5years now.
I see a lot of messages in trust7 about the possibilities of getting DE citizenship.
But here I just would like to see your views about pros&cons of having DE citizenship over just having NE (or BE).
Here are my views:
pros:
-No more 6 month limit to stay outside DE (Europe)
-eligible to work in UK

cons:
- I loose my Indian citizenship

Currently, I am analyzing one simple question.
why should I go for getting DE citizenship?

I would really appreciate your opinions.

Thx in advance,
Jelda

@Jelda

Couple of months ago I had a job offer from US with almost double salary to what I am make in DE, but I had to turn the offer down. The reason being I am in DE for last 6.5 years and I have no desire to move to a new country just to start everything from the scratch.....in just 6 more months I would have my DE passport and I can go and work anywhere and for anybody.....well, only for those who can pay the most :-)

Hi Akshay,
thx for your views.

But I don't think you are eligible to work in USA with German Citizenship.

you think of any easier/better chances being DE citizen than Indian?

Hi,
There is a misconception that after getting DE citizenship you are eligible for Greencard Lottery. It is not true becuase it also depends on place of Birth and your Parents Nationality. So if you were Indian anytime then you are not eligible.

Hope it helps you.

@Jelda, Peacy

Who cares about US Green-Card!!

My point was that I could not take that job offer because I am standing just before citizenship process. I don't want to leave germany like this after struggling for 6.5 years. It would be great to leave germany with an insurance to come back and work anytime in Europe.

Hello,
I am also an Indian working here for the last 6 years. I would also like to take the German Citizenship . But I have got some questions regarding
How to work in India after getting German Citizenship, Should we need a work permit or is it enough to have a PIO card or OIC (Overseas India citizenship)

Hello Jelda,
I have also thought about this since the time I became eligible for German citizenship.
Here is one more point to your list of cons.
You can forget about getting your part of the pension as a lump sum( i.e once you leave germany).

Pros of DE Citizenship:
* you can vote

Cons:
* you cant inherit property in India
* you cant buy agricultural land
* you can own just one house but no commercial buildings like factories, malls etc

Those who know can correct me if am wrong.

@gc2001

I agree once you have taken GC, you won't get your pension money back until you are 65.

But GC also opens new avenues to get highly paid jobs in EU, and there is visa-free travel to (almost) everywhere in the world, plus you can go back to India and work with an assurance that you can come back anytime.

@fred

Let me put it this way:

Pros of DE Citizenship:
* you can not vote in India
(saves you from dilemmas like for which bastard to vote)

Cons:
(with PIO card)
* you can inherit property in India
* you can buy agricultural land
* you can own commercial buildings like factories, malls etc

>>I agree once you have taken GC, you won't get your pension money back until you are 65.

If i am right it should be 67 and not 65. Who knows, by the time we reach retirement it could be 70.

Pros of DE Citizenship:
* Visa free travel for lot of countries
* Freedom to work in EU Countries and less hassle in other countries to get Workpermit

Pros of OCI card
1. Multiple entry, multi-purpose life long visa to visit India;

2. Exemption from reporting to Police authorities for any length of stay in India; and

3. Parity with NRIs in financial, economic and educational fields, except in the
acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.

hmmm....it is a funny thought going to ABH (or equal) in India and applying for a work-permit :-) I personally don't know if we have such spooky departments in India :-)

@Akshay
Well, the pension system is pathetic. That is one reason why I dont want to take GC.
Regarding highly paid jobs if one does not want to look outside germany for jobs that advantage is gone. Regarding Visas you are right. But then there are 10 year visas for many countries and once you get it, it is much less trouble.
