Deregistration / Abmeldung and Maintaining Bank Account

Toggle
Hi All,

I am returning back from germany to India in January and would be doing de-registeration (Abmeldung). Is there a relation between abmeldung and maintaining a german bank account. I heard from one of the bank representatives that I can't keep my bank account once I deregister!

Is it true? Please let me know your views/experiences.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Chirag

@chirag

I don't know the law regarding deregistration.

But when i returned to India for good in 2008, i did NOT close my account. My banker was Deutsche Bank. Going further the banker was so good to me then she took my Indian adress and sent me communication to my indian adress.

I did close it in 2009, after i received my Pension refund. Remember its quicker to receive the pension refund in German bank in Germany rather than in india.

my story
deregistered in oct 2008
pension refund in sug-sep 2009
bank closed in oct 2009

AFAIK, there is no legal obligation for a bank to close your account once you live abroad. That said, some banks have policies due to money laundering regulations but it mostly regards the opening of accounts. Try to get an answer from yur bank and if they insist move your account to another bank andwhen it's done then change your address.

Thanks aalvarez and savion for your answers.
Meanwhile I also checked again with my bank and they told that I can keep my account and change address to wherever I move.
