anyone with German Passport with OCI(Overseas Citizenship of India) ?

Alternar
Hi,
Since having a GP with OCI is sounding very advantageous, I am planning to apply for a German Passport at the earliest.
Is there anyone with a German Passport and Overseas Citizenship of India?

I would appreciate if someone can share their experiences.
Regards
Chandra

Hi chandra,
If you have OCI, then you can travel to india without a visa with ur german pp. and u wouldnt have to register at the foreign office when u want to extend ur stay in india.
i heard that u have also advantage at the immigration, like u wouldnt have stand in queue with the normal foreigner at the immigration.
those are the advantage...
i am also planning to apply for that once i give up my indian citizenship.
by the way, do u know how to give up indian citizenship. They said i will only get German Citizenship when i give up my old Citizenship.
Indian citizen automatically cancelled when u get another one.... so, i am confused how to prove that to the german.
thanks

Hi MMoore,

As per the statements of some of our trust7 members, it seems the Indian passport has to be handed over to the Eingburgeramt and they take the resonsibility of returning it back to the Indian officials.

Or am I wrong?

I Bet, the normal foreigner queue will be much shorter than the Indian queue ;-) with all these jetsetting Indians.

@chandra

Disadv of OCI

1. No government job(no use nowadays)
2. No Voting ( cant see any positives there)
3. No Agricultural Lands (if you do have Agricultural lands change it to some one else's name)

Otherwise you have all the rights the normal Indians have regarding Education, Employement, Properties etc.

So how is the family?

Hi Raj,
I do not own any agricultural lands. So with all the benefits mentioned, the OCI with GP is the best option any Indian can have in Europe.

One more advantage is,
Even if you are planning to settle down in India at a later point of time, you can claim your Indian passport back, which means, you can also claim your lumpsum rente payment thereafter.

Family is doing good. How is yours?

I am not sure about that. Once you are over the 5 year limit maybe you get your pension only in the 60's.

Hi Chandra & Raj,

According to my knowledge, the dual citizenship (OCI) is only possible if the other country also had ratified the agreement with Indian government. So far Germany is not, but Netherlands and UK are. So OCI is not possible as a German Passport holder. But PIO (Person of Indian Origin) is possible, but it is some what less of OCI. For example, with PIO you have to register with police, if your stay exceeds 180 days in India.

But you can always cross-check if agreement has been ratified recently.

You can find more information from Indian Consulate web-site.

@Kumaran

You r right that Germany doesnt allows Dual Citizenship. But OCI is not Dual Citizenship, It is just a Unlimited Resident/work Permit (Except Government jobs) to India. Therefore it is allowed in Germany too. This is the information from Indian Consulates.

Hi Kumaran,

The ratification of OCI has been already done with Germany. I read the letter written by Pranab Mukherjee, our External Affairs minister, stating that German Indians will be granted OCI.

The same info is available in our consulate websites.
