A very informative and well-compiled site. I have a query and was wondering if you can offer some insights.

My son was born in Berlin on 25th Nov. 2012. As per the rules he is eligible to receive a German passport, but we have not yet received the letter from auslanderbehorde confirming that he is eligible. We also visited auslanderbehorde to follow-up but no one entertained us there saying that we will have to wait.

Since this letter is required to apply for the german passport, we are in a fix. 

Out problem is that we have to go to India in the month of March and so in dire need to apply for the passport asap.

Do you know if there is any way to get it done quickly.

Hello

In general, the letter you get is from StadtAmt. StadtAmt waits for CONFIRMATION/APPROVAL from Auslanderbehorde. You should check with StandAmt (same office from where Birth Certificate is originally issued).

It could be time consuming sometime. So have some PLAN B. (e.g be ready to postpone the trip or apply for Indian passport for now and then change to German passport lator).
