German entry visa type 'D' = shengen visa

Hi all,

My wife and I have German entry visas of type 'D' (they say VALID FOR: DEUTSCHLAND on top). I'm already in germany and will be getting my german work-permit/residence-permit soon. My wife will travel to Berlin around June 15th and will stay only for about 40 days. So she doesnt have enough time to get a residence-permit stamped (which may take approx 2 months in berlin).
However, she would like to visit some neighbouring shengen countries. Does her german entry visa qualify as a shengen visa? (I've seen that shengen visas generally mention VALID FOR: SHENGEN on top). Would really appreciate some help.
